How to Measure
Measure across the drum body, not across the rolling hoops or the top rim. Wrap a tape around the body and divide by 3.1416 if a caliper is not to hand — that reading is the circumference the band has to cover.
What the Result Means
A gap under about 100 mm sits comfortably inside the travel of two extension springs. Above roughly 200 mm the band is being asked to close a distance that puts the tension into the jacket edge rather than around the drum, which is where a longer band belongs instead.

Inputs are scoped to drums and pails, so a diameter above 5,000 mm or a band above 20,000 mm returns no result. The calculator does not model spring travel, jacket thickness or drum out-of-round.
